Archive for March, 2011

Life has been silly busy lately.  I’m working in my field of choice.  More often than not, it doesn’t FEEL like work .  I’m very happy and blessed, though truthfully I’ve worked SO hard to get to this point and am dedicated at it every day.  Being as positive as possible helps too.

The Polymorphines- Doing their publicity!

I’ve been asked to be a guesthost on 93.1 FM CKCU Radio program A Juncture on Wednesday, March 30 from 5- 6 p.m. I’ll be spinning some tracks never before heard on Canadian radio!  Exclusively, a new song from The Polymorphines.

I’m still solidifying dates for that big concert I mentioned before.  It’s hush-hush until I have some details nailed down but I can’t wait to share it.

What else?  I’ve been too busy to work on finishing my book but life is so good!

… And I was listening to The Cure, Rancid, and Fleet Foxes while I wrote this.

Ottawa Fashion Week took over the capital last week and I was privileged enough to be able to participate.  I applied as a freelancer- they labeled me a blogger, therefore, this is my blog post on it.

Arriving on the Red Carpet- Photo by Ming Wu

I struggled deciding what to wear to the Media launch.  I had a moment straight out of Almost Famous when I showed up to the swanky club.  Two beautiful ladies with clipboards on the red carpet looked me head to toe, “Who are you with?”

“Me?  I’m with myself.”

“No, who are you with?”

“Uh-,” I replied nervously trying to get a peek at their clipboard.  The event wasn’t being advertised outside the club. “Samantha Everts?  I should be on the list.” I offered, my hope dashed temporarily.  Their eyes met mine again as they scrutinized their clipboard.

“Oh, Samantheverts.com?” said a beautiful fashionista beside the ear-budded security guard.

“That’s me!”

“Ok, go ahead in.”  I breathed a loud sigh of relief.  There were ice sculptures, chandeliers and designer heels that cost more than I make in a month.  Champagne was flowing and passed out to all the designers, photographers and media in attendance.   I didn’t recognize any journalists or freelancers there.  In comparison to other media launches I’ve been to fashion industry people are quite different from music folks.

Birds of America- LOVE these ruched lace leggings. Check out her fab pillbox hat!

I attended the opening night event featuring Khala Morgan (very 60s vibe), Birds of America and Montreal jewelry designer Micalla.

Confession:  I spent $5 on a cab from Rideau Centre to arrive on the Red Carpet outside of the event and change into my 5″ heels.   Flipping through magazines before the event I  wore the brightest dress out of the evening from designer brand Topshop from the UK.  I didn’t know everyone else would wear black.

Mafia!

I also ran into an old schoolmate of mine who had her jewelry line Mafia Jewelry showcased in the Khala Morgan show.  She has this radio necklace pendant that I am going to have to save up for.  Really cool stuff that I’d only ever seen (somewhat)- similar things to in the UK.  I like unique jewelry that has a story and definitely have a piece that has a dinosaur on it.

New friends! check out Lee's photography linked above.

As media, I got the “VIP” treatment at the event and didn’t know I had a plus one, which was a shame because there are many people I would have loved to have shared the experience with.  I made friends with some photographers and bloggers that let me sit with them.  With my VIP pass even though I was ushered to the front of the line of 200 odd people to sit in the first row I was a bit self-conscious and decided to sit in the second row.  I smiled but was uncomfortably out of my element having never gone to a show like this before and unsure of the protocol. As soon as it started I just leaned forward and took it all in.  Absolutely captivating in real life.

On the models, I had hoped my friend Kate Eaton would have done one of the shows but she’s so busy with other modeling jobs (and doing amazing with them).  She’s done other Fashion Weeks (Montreal and Toronto) so I was eager to get her take on the Ottawa one.

Khala Morgan- my personal favourite of the collection- very feminine

With the first show it was lovely to see a mix of body sizes (lots of curves!) and ethnicities.  Two girls DID slip, however but the heels were probably 6″ or higher.  Watching all the different walk styles and interaction with the audience was fascinating.  I wondered looking at the women in the front row furiously scribbling in sunglasses if any of them was Ottawa’s equivalent to Anna Wintour.   I’ve modeled for years but only glamor and artistically so this side of the industry remains a curiosity.  Also, who knew Ottawa had paparazzi?

Last note, each of the shows was less than 10 minutes but the three shows took over 3 hours to prepare.

Would have loved to have seen Adrien Wu’s collection but there’s always next year!

On my phone: how you’ll pretty much always find me- balancing all my jobs. Photo courtesey of Hello Ottawa

I’ve had some pretty exciting opportunities come ’round my way in the last week.  Some I can’t even believe I’ve been privileged enough to be involved with.

Quick round off:

  • publicity with Silly Robot for Izzy
  • Writing a bunch for AUX TV
  • BIG concerts in the works for promoting.  Things that are going to ROCK the local music community- but for now are shhh- secret.
  • More work with Metro News!
  • Band publicity now with new groups
  • Story pitch to be featured on next week’s CBC Radio 1′s DNTO
  • Open File articles and research

I got the, ‘So what don’t you do?’ comment again today.  My response?  Fly.  :D

I’m supposed to be writing a review of the opening night performance so obviously I became distracted when I came across this video.  Such lovely people sharing their thoughts and experiences of the poetry festival.

I’m the girl in the purple coat talking about Raymond Chandler and Tom Waits.

"Yeah there's blood on the wall, but I'm happy. So happy."

That’s a quote from Best Coast’s aptly named song “Happy.”  Life has been ridiculously busy but so full of positive things, especially career-wise from positive like-minded people.   It’s amazing what you can accomplish for yourself if you’re persistent enough.  Something my step-father taught me years ago when I first started concert promoting and was concerned about asking for sponsors was, “All they can say is no.  What’s the worse thing that can happen by asking?”

Now as a freelancer I’m constantly sending out ideas and story pitches to people.  I don’t necessarily have expectations, but obviously I have media outlets I’d really like to be affiliated with and be able to work for.  These things are finally happening for me.  This week I have my first story with AUX TV running and I’ve been talking to CBC radio again.

I had the pleasure of meeting the rest of Ottawa freelance community last Thursday at the first “Local Online Media” social where I met members of Open File, Apartment 613 (both of whom I’m a regular with) along with Spacing Ottawa, Hill Times, The Wig, Culture Magazine, The Citizen, I’m trying to remember all of them.  Regardless, incredibly satisfying, and comforting, to be in a room and have the question asked, “Who do you write for?“  There was about 40 individuals at the Imperial Bar on Bank Street.  They’ll be some really cute pictures on Flickr as there was a photobooth and props set up for each writer or editor.  Mine was very James Joyce’ean.

Rah Rah! Playing March 11 @ Dekcuf!

I do believe the concert-promoting bug has bitten again.  My show this week is practically sold out already. I’m very humbled by this and so looking forward to seeing all the groups do well.  In the process of promoting this show, so many new opportunities and connections – which I cannot divulge now- have presented themselves.  More shows are now a definite.

Well said, Gaga!

Despite me running with my head spinning, staying with the radio station has been so beneficial. And in the debate between the new Britney Spears song and Lady Gaga song, I’m sorry, but Britney takes it.   The lyrics to “Born This Way” are so encouraging.  I was really hoping that I’d be able to see Gaga last night in Ottawa, but c’est la vie.  I ended up at the most positive energy house show up my street instead.  I’ve said it before, but I love my neighbourhood.

Band promotion kind of took over a large chunk of last week too.  And then the clients announced they were doing a huge music video!!!  I’m going to be in meetings this week and next for more promotional marketing and media representation. Not going to lie, when I woke up this morning, I wasn’t sure what day it was and had to check the calendar.  I just really haven’t stopped.  But again, I’m so happy with this.

I’m going to have some more media features in the next little bit.  Once they’re published I’ll share here.

In the meantime this week will be a juggling act with VerseFest in full swing, some band coverage and prep for CMW in Toronto (still on the fence about the last one).  I ended up not covering the Genies, I was in talks but ended up with previous commitments that took priority.  It’s all good though!

Working a Hot 89.9 event with Mr. Watson - Ottawa's mayor!
