Archive for July, 2011

I’ve been an avid CBC Radio 3 listener since the site was launched in 2005 and have been pitching stories since last Winter.  This past June my pitch,  “How to get into concerts for Free” was picked up basically beginning a major career goal. (Check the “Radio” section of the site for more info.)

I learned SO much about recording, editing, producing, writing and researching radio documentaries in the last four weeks.  I camped out at a friend’s place who had the right software and had a crash course in audio editing on Adobe Audition.  Saying, “For CBC Radio 3, I’m Samantha Everts,” provided a little bit too much excitement.  I just really hope it’s only a hint of what’s to come!

I can’t wait to pitch again … but I’ll be taking a week just to cool off though.  (and go to Osheaga Festival in Montreal!)

My friend Alex Wolski shot and edited this commercial for The Polymorphines a few weeks ago.  I conceptualized and was the producer.  This is part of my publicity work.

It took one long hot summer night to get right and indeed I pulled extras off the street to dance.  You can invite yourself to their CD Release here.

Soon enough I’ll be prepping for my involvement in the Ottawa International Film Festival.

Food writer?

This is working.

Food writing.  Food reviewing.  Food critic?  Uh- not what I signed on with when I finished university.

I love food, don’t get me wrong, the dozens of worn cookbooks will back me up.   It makes up a huge part of my strict vegeterian lifestyle.

I’m not a vigilante or anything, I just think that people should be informed on where their food comes from.  To make educated purchases, “vote with your fork.”

I interviewed a writer over a year ago about how to ‘make it’ in the field and he told me that he himself had become a food writer for a while before his first novel came out.  Makes sense?  Starving artist getting paid to eat food?  I’m there! And just like you, I won’t miss an episode of Top Chef.

My mission with writing the food section is to help inform people about local initiatives, sustainable farming and restaurant practices and community organizations that help support non-processed, non-pesticized food to people of all financial situations.  If I can introduce a wide variety of responsible food choices in restaurants and ethnic cuisines then that’s great.  Covering the market in being sensitive to allergies such as soy, gluten, dairy, etc. is also a prerogative.

I don’t try to write anything I don’t know.  I’ve actually invited award-winning chefs and foodies along with me if there was a restaurant or situation in which I couldn’t participate.  Having their expertise present has been very helpful.

In the meantime, I continue to make a mess in the kitchen as I whip up a storm of delicious veg cuisine.  My best way to convince people that it’s not hippie food is just to feed them without announcing it’s animal product-free.  Trust me, you’ll be convinced, but if you must reach for that steak, I’m not going to stop you… just make sure it’s been locally raised, grain-fed, and well-treated.

So I made an investment in my journalism career last week.  Throw in a photo pass to Ottawa’s biggest annual music festival and it’s been a very fun, albeit, crash course in concert photography.  When I was younger, I used to drag my digital cam out to everything but one too many mosh pits meant its demise.

Now I have the Nikon I’ve been eying for months.

I can’t post any photos yet as they are going to… Cap X! with any luck :)   So far I’ve shot:  Girltalk, Eryka Badhu, Rise Against, Paramedics, Diamond Rings, Yukon Blonde, Library Voices, Little Scream, Neon Indian, and attempted the Black Keys.

In the meantime, check out my interview with Diamond Rings for them here and other Bluesfest coverage here.  My interview with Ra Ra Riot has yet to be posted online yet.

Now back to editing some stuff for Ottawa Magazine!

Oh, and show me yer stuff…
