Overachiever?

Caught in the act! (Working!)

So I was interviewing a band recently and they said they had checked out my site, “You’re an overachiever, eh?”  I said, thanks but I wouldn’t call myself that.  I’ve always been ambitious and to quote Jack White, “Inspiration and work ethic, they ride right next to each other.”  I truly believe that.  While I might have only taken 2 days “off” in the last month, I love what I do.  It presents its own challenges but if you’re driven, there’s nothing you can’t achieve.

Example of this in action, during Pride Week I made my way down to a sex workshop and magazine launch where I introduced myself to the editors.  I’m proud to say I’m now working for 2B Magazine, Ottawa’s newest GLBT magazine.

That’s not chance or dumb luck, that’s me working it.  I’m really thrilled for my cover story next month “Werking Clas$:  Queer Musicians,” that is basically about whether or not it’s more difficult for queer artists to make a living off their art than straight ones. C’est ecrit en Francais aussi!

One of my two articles in this month's Ottawa Magazine- pick it up at Chapters now!

My photography skills have growing as well and I’ve sold some photos recently to various news outlets.  I still need to make a more thorough Flickr, apologies! I’d like to focus more on getting great candid shots- food photography I still do weekly for Metro ;) I must admit, I felt like a real photojournalist while I was chasing the Dyke March and climbing on top of fences and racing along the crowd to get the best shots.

On the really career-goal-orientated field, after being hired as replacement columnist for a program, I met with a CBC Radio 1 producer last week to discuss more future opportunities.   I can’t wait to see what happens, I just need to find my place.

I’m developing some new concepts for the Ottawa Rock Lottery and just filling out grant forms to make it better.

See you on the red carpet at Fashion Week!

Heroes

Genius man who marched to his own drum, trusted his instincts and risked his life literally to support the arts he believed in. (Tony Wilson)

I’ve realized all of my heroes are writers.  From filmmakers to authors to musicians, it’s the words that matter to me.  How they all come together, the sorts of ideas they are able to present.

There’s a few people whose tenacity and career-drive are inspiring regularly and I could go on about in great lengths, they’re that important to me:

-          Tony Wilson (Factory Records fame)

-          Kevin Smith

-          Alanis Morrisette

-          Henry Rollins

-          Jack White (of White Stripes)

-          Casie Stewart

*honourary mentions to Pamela Des Barres, Sook Yin Lee and John Lennon.

I was thinking about this after I got back from New York, would I rather be a writer at the New York Times or Village Voice?  Guess which one won out therefore,

People whose jobs I wouldn’t mind having:

-          Neil Strauss (NY Times music writer)

-          Nick Kent (NME writer)

-          Griel Marcus (genius music academic)

… and I get jealous regularly of who and how these guys are able to interview their guests:

-          Jian Gomeshi &  George Strombo
