I awoke to this…385358_10151357678598928_2057227837_n

So promptly looked like this.  Basically like I was going to rob someone.

My sunglasses frosted over, I kid you not.

Time to start searching for warm getaways on Expedia.ca?

I was invited to be in The Murder Plans‘ music video for their amazing song, “Tell a Lie,” this weekend.  The concept is based on the album sleeve image except that instead of the four guys, it’s a group of their friends in quick jump cuts singing the song in the same shot in the same clothes… and glasses.  Which made reading the cue cards a bit difficult, but Michael the singer sang along with me the whole time.  Here are some stills from it.

Waiting for my cue. Some of the clothes were huge! (I'm wearing a skirt underneath!)

That's the Ottawa River behind me. Same image as their album cover.

I think I'm eyeing the tambourine here... I'm wearing my friend Nick's clothes here.

Singing!

I was supposed to look like this guy:

REALLY singing. Great lyrics to this song! All about Ottawa!

Thanks so much guys, this was a lot of fun!  Goodluck with the editing!

Advance tickets can be bought from bands and me!

I’m the concert promoter for this show and, not to be toot my own horn, but the bands on it are awesome!  Please do come out and see some of the best Ottawa has to offer.  I’ve been a fan of Rah Rah ever since seeing them last Summer with my friend Matt from I(heart)Music who first brought them to town.

They also have a song for any love-jaded individuals this Valentine’s where the lyrics go, “It is fashionable, to be single,/ in big cities but not small towns.”

They’re currently on tour in Europe with Wintersleep but you check out their video to that song here:

This is "part of the history of Ottawa" right here. And incidentally what the film will be all about.

We started shooting the pilot/documentary last night, just mainly interior details of the club.  I’ll be very busy researching and forming together a narrative for the film in the next few weeks.  It’s exciting and I’ve already learned some really cool information about Ottawa that I can’t wait to share with you all.

Kudos to you if you can figure out where this is.

Ottawa is a very vibrant culturally-active scene that is poised for some sort of boom.  I was reminded of this only two weeks ago when I attended the launch of PosterLoop and the OIFF 72 Film Festival.  PosterLoop is going to revolutionize how events get advertised in the capital using videoscreens in local businesses.

My friends won for "Polar Bear Love"! So proud of them!

However, at the film awards I met so many amazing and interesting people! It was so refreshing to meet people in the city genuinely excited and involved in local film.   The premise of the film festival is that filmmakers get given phrases, places, and actions they must include in the creation of a short film that must be created, shot, and edited all in 3 days.  The winning team admitted they did not sleep.  Check out their winning film, which is to be screened at the Mayfair’s Painted Lips and Lolly Lips Valentine’s Film Festival on February 11th.

I apparently 'smel' ;)

Outside of “The Dude” jokes, I still suck at bowling.  But! in a twist of fate, since I have carpal tunnel in my right hand, I started to use my left- and got two strikes!  This was a post-christmas party for the radio station and full of awesome people that make me so glad I didn’t walk from the job.

Thanks, Hot!

Initially I was in it for the extra cash, and now with promo/writing work, I can’t work as much as I did.  Now I’m simply elated with the connections it’s provided me.  (and free stuff- like this!)

I hit the town with my coworkers at the stations’ Live Lounge to check out Grand Motel.  HUGE crowd for them.

Blogger Brunch - photo by ming wu

The First Ottawa Indie Blogger Brunch was held last Sunday to much success.   It was really positive sharing a meal with bloggers/writers involved in fashion, arts, film, food, music, and a lot of laughs were had.  There was about 15 of us, despite the time change and was held at the Imperial on Bank Street that is one of few places that accommodates vegan breakfasts.  The next one will be held at February 27 at Chez Lucien, I’m one of the organizers so please do come by and say hi :)

In terms of writing work, I have not talked to any rock stars or celebrities this week, though was reflecting how lucky I was that at such a young age artists like Thomas of Strike Anywhere and Kevin Devine were willing to talk to me at lengths about music, politics and art.  Those conversations had a huge influence on me later.

I chopped off all my hair!

People have been approaching me lately asking for advice when it comes to writing or everything else I am involved with.  Don’t get my wrong, it’s flattering and I am happy to help and offer support (within reason).  My advice to you, if you’re passionate about something, JUST DO IT!  Do it for yourself, do it for your friends; if you want to create something, all the power to you.  Douglas Coupland said he meets dozens of people in a year that tell him they’re written a novel but it’s uncompleted.  His advice?  “Just finish the damn thing and you’re already published.”  That’s encouragement for me as well since I’ve been trudging away with my own book, Marty McFly since last March now.  A grant I was working on recently got canceled (thanks Harper government) so it’s back to the drawing board.  I’d really like to make a proper business model and have a mentor take me under their wing to show me how to write and be financially stable whilst doing so.  I’m pitching like crazy in the meantime.

I realize as well I need to add a promotions toggle button at the top of my site as this is something I’ve been doing for the last 8 years.  More on that later.

Thanks for reading! :)

Snowday- It ain't over 'til she sings.

So a week back I was surprised to get an email from my old English flatmate telling me she was in Montreal for a few days.  We lived together with a group of 6 other girls when I was attending the University of Nottingham in the UK.  As charming and lovely as Jackie is my first interaction with her went as follows:

Samantha- “Hey nice to meet you!  I’m Samantha.  I’m Canadian.”

Jackie- “You talk funny.”

Then walked off! Hilarious!

It was her first year of university and, ever the experienced independent woman, I taught her how to microwave a potato and make Kraft Dinner with resounding, ‘Ooos,’ while her and another flatmate smoked shisha until 5 a.m., played ‘bagsy’, or held parties of 30+ people in my kitchen at the most random times.  I learned so much about English culture from living with those girls.

Being able to reflect on memories of living in Notts with someone that had a similar experience was such a treat.  I had to curb talking about the UK a few weeks after I moved back or else just became too annoying to my friends with my constant comparisons and stories of European living.

skating on the Rideau Canal!

It was really cool to show her my city.  I do love Ottawa.  Only so many people can say that but I think living in other countries and provinces affirmed that it truly is home.  We did the traditional tourist things, oddly, when we visited Parliament there was creepily no one around at 7 p.m.  Despite throwing an insane amount of Canadiana at her (Tim Hortons, Hockey, the Canal) she had an incredibly ‘hipster’ visit, as I brought her out to Avant Garde, So Good, Raw Sugar, Zaphods, Mavericks, oh, and GT Boutique.  It was so great catching up with her and even now is surreal writing that she was even here.

Paramedics photo by Jamie Kronick

Onto more arts-based interests- Saw an incredible set from Ottawa’s Paramedics for their CD last night.  Despite the -32 weather, people came out in swarms to support the guys.  One of their songs had two drummers and synth pop similar to the Shout Out Out Out Outs, which I loved.  So many good people were out last night including my old friends in The Love Machine.  Thought that stuck with me as I was getting ready, ‘You know you’re Canadian WHEN… you wear two pairs of tights and two pair of socks on a Saturday night when you go out to a club.’  You can read the interview I did with Paramedics here! Their album packaging is unlike any I’ve ever seen before in my many years of working in radio.

Thanks to Paramedics for the sweet swag back from Slaysh!  Being me, I didn’t even hear my name called out for the $500 gift pack.  Very cool stuff indeed.

oakley tuque, sexy URANIUM necklace, swedish WESC argyle cardigan, new FLUTE earbuds, beautiful URANIUM scarf, fuzzy COAL mitts, and brand new kick-ass SPY OPTIC sunglasses

Braids Mtl

Highly worth mentioning, Montreal’s Braids blew my mind on Friday night with their dreamy-Bjork-like minimalist atmospheric pop.  (Lester Bangs just called after reading that last sentence, sorry.)  You can read the interview I did with them HERE.

I’m going to be busy working on some really cool projects in the next month including movies, photography and music.  They can’t be shared quite yet here though, shhhh!

Actually a good part of the week was absorbed with a Hot event opening a cellphone store.  I’m enjoying working for Newcap Radio, there’s a few connections I’m hoping to use in the new year.  stay tuned. We also opened the new Cher movie Burlesque ;)

This week was so insane it was hard to breath.   Forced myself to when I hit up the Tea Party on George St.  I also devoured this book called ‘I don’t care about your Band’ by Julie Klausner.  It’s described as a biography, even though to someone like me, who’s dated all the crazies and just downright has bad luck, was almost like a self-help book offering some optimism for the future.  Apparently, bad relationships breed excellent creative writing work.

She also shared this tidbit that carried through with me as I experienced an awkward moment, “Follow what it is you love and makes you want to be better, always.  But don’t get yourself tied up with any kind of rock star- musician or not- who makes you feel like you’re not made of star stuff.   Because of course you are.” See- brilliant words.

I did have a bit of a surreal experience interviewing this band I first saw in a basement in 2003.  They were opening for The Arkells on Thursday at Live Lounge and me being me, I wanted to talk to them about it.  I’ve been following them ever since.  READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE!

The Reason

Honestly, just realizing I’ve been involved in the music ‘biz for so long had me getting pretty retrospective.  I know the lead singer Adam was surprised I was still at it.  I think my 16 year-old self would have been impressed that I was still working in music. Who would have thought punk-rock promoting would have led to a career like this?  I’m not complaining.  I’m definitely proud of my accomplishments… if only I could survive off of them though.  Just more motivation to keep at it!

I had to make a list of my ‘credentials’ recently as………….drum-roll please… I’m going to be doing PR for up and comers’ Grand Motel

This means a lot of work is in store for me in the next couple of months, but the guys are sweethearts and have the drive (more importantly, SOUND!) to make it work.  I get to use the accumulated knowledge, experience and connections I’ve made in the Canadian indie music scene over the last 8 years to help make them a success.  I’m really excited to have been asked to join. )

Cheerio!
